Climate-Neutral Camp and Congress

For contact information, see https://events.ccc.de/congress/2018/wiki/index.php/Projects:C3sustainability

Preparation for first contact with Projektleitung

General Questions:

   - What has been done in the past w.r.t. sustainability/climate-neutral congress, what were the issues.

Concrete suggestions/topics for future camp/congresses:

power production @camp (currently: diesel generators on-site)
There was some solar power installation at the previous camp, not much though. But sustainable energy could be a theme for the next one (like moving objects). Providing a platform for assemblies and individuals to show off their PV installation or DC power grid could be a good motivator.
Don't forget to calculate the impact of shipping the powergenerators, to power a camp you would need a lot fo trucks full of solar panels, diesel is currently the best option with the total co2 emissions
   sanitary @camp (compost toilets?)
plastic bottles (->bring your own cup!) plus raise awareness about drinking tap water (useful mainly for non Germans)
trash recycling (different bins for different trash types)
offset the emissions from the event (either only the emissions of the event itself, or also include the emissions from the participants. The latter option is much more data-intensive and leads to higher emissions to be offset)
   energy efficiency measures (?)
encourage people to travel by train and not by plane
monitor consumption of energy and water. Monitor production of trash.
content-track about sustainability (blipp: I guess this is suggesting an official content track? I like that) - yes
Calculate total congress footprint and display publicly (nerds love statistics)
   Catering
could they use dishes that can be reused? We could have dish washer angel shifts.
       Also: backstage kitchen
What about (more) vegan food choices?
good to know: the heaven's kitchen is already mostly vegetarian/vegan - entirely vegetarian, to be precise ;)
Messe Leipzig might be cross-financed by the food stalls, so it is more complex to replace them by more vegetarian/vegan options
Bits & Bäume had apples for free and a cooperative for catering
replace straws (for drinks) by makkaroni noodles
EU-ban will be in effect in 3 years, so we need to find a solution anyway
   ride sharing
do not drive alone, travel with like-minded people, reduce traffic and pollution
to the event, from the event, during the event
integrated with registration/ticket sale to offer or search for ride
   ...your ideas!

Concrete projects

   recycling
establish trash cans for separate collection (talk to Bernd Keller/PL/$responsible_person)
   waste
work with backstage kitchen, messe, bar with regards to one-time-use plastics (straws, plates, plastic bottles)
talk to heaven with regards to plastic bottles for angels
   gathering statistics
   compost toilets (camp)
energy supply @ camp (currently: diesel generators)
   food choices
       apple supply
       vegan/vegetarian food stalls
   sustainability discussion track
   compensate emissions
concrete steps? calculate co2 output of event?
perhaps this is only really useful after having atleast some statistical data?

meta

   establishing sustainability team

inconcrete

   energy efficency
   water efficency
include external experience (climate camp, bits and bäume)
   logistic team -> reducing emission
   participants -> reducing emission

postponed

   creating a survey
How much extra money would you spend for a sustainable event
       Would you object vegan-only food?

Concrete projects (camp)

   dishes
standard re-usable dishes for food stalls and have dish washer angel shifts? possible huge blocker for camp: water usage.
degradable dishes + waste separation - the "Veggi Spirit" (I thank that was the name) food stand at 35C3 had exclusively bio degradable dishes. When I asked about the price: "We don't know, we just buy so many"

Pasting here the text from the main pad on this topic: There was last year a talk (in German):

   https://media.ccc.de/v/34c3-8741-treibhausgasemissionen_einschatzen#t=1931
We are talking about 100 kg CO2 per person, which seams feasible to compensate. The emmissions are mostly coming from traveling which I would exclude.
I would perhaps perfer in the first year a voluntary model so that everone can decide during the booking to compensate or not. This should be a no-brainer
and we don't need discussions about higher ticket prices that are perhaps not affordable for everyone. Model similar to atmosfair.
Other questions are: Can we change the power provider? At which points we can make the congress more efficient? Must the food area in the winter under one layer of glass?

The Camp should be more easily to get some power from sun. But in my eyes it's more important to use this to share knowledge so that the people installing more PV on the homes and companies.

Comments here:

Isn't that meeting a good model of the world/humanity/politics in these days (it is just that nobody really has a plan and we don't even know how to develop one)

Discussion on Day 3

sustainability has both social and environmental parts
water and electricity is good for statistics
most attendees wouldn't want to share their travel data, so we should not require that

With Dodger

buy local, travel local has been done already and is being done (food and drink supply)
Flora Mate is producen in concentate tabs
Club Mate is brewed in Bavaria
Leipzig Messe cannot be dictated to use green power (City of Leipzig owns Messe)
Power supply is usually non-negotiable in such event locations
The main goal is to keep the ticket prices low
   Premium-Beer tries their best
Chaos West tries to minimize transport cost by collectivising
a climate-neutral/sustainability team should go into all the sub-orga teams to coordinate, because the orga structure is decentralised
Private cars were avoided as much as possible by getting the tram tickets
Camp has tanks to bring white water and carry away grey and black water. Hacker's shower too much (too much grey water). Fusion festival hasl experience on that, and on black water for fertilisation of agriculture (illegal in Germany)
Dodger talked to the compost toilet organiser (goldeimer) who supplies the Fusion festival
The biggest points are power consumption and transportation
Art Event do the project lead for the camp
Main failure points: cost and doability
We could set up a meeting with Markus and CPunkt, they can tell us the constraint (rough estimate for camp ticket prices ~240€)
Dodger stresses: we are all 'the orga'. We need to find out what all people want
Ticket prices are calculated on a cost basis and attendees are asked to pay more to allow cross financing of friend tickets etc
things from kids space are stored until next year
possible first step is information gathering: ask LOC, Fengel (Power), CPunkt (Financials) what they dostan
Idea: do a survey (online?), start to ask some people here on site, then compile it for online use
tale of the unisex toilets as a model
example of the LOC team: no-one has any time, but they are probably open to facilitation
c3auti, awareness team: they just started doing it
be prepared for people that block, for hard fights
   "produce no-brainers"

Impressions

all this will depend on relationships (communication with other orga teams), and this does not change over night
collect list of _possible_ measures, and then see what is _efficient_/_effective_
   pick battles
between camp and congress: what can be done for the camp, which is already this August?
there are things independent from other orga teams, à la “start small”
statistics are a nice nerdy things
NOC dashboard is awesome, maybe we can use that as an example and create a carbon emissions dashboard.
Thus, even if we can't be completely carbon-neutral, all camp/congress participants can look at dashboard and understand what their carbon footprint is split up into categories

Next steps

   collect actionable projects
have two champions for each project in the end
